Like the rest of the nation, California has experienced an alarming rise of COVID-19 infections due to the delta variation. It has harmed children more than previous viral strains, leading some teacher’s unions to soften their stance on vaccination requirements.

California’s two biggest teachers unions, both close supporters of the governor, endorsed his proposal on Wednesday. According to the California Teachers Association and the California Federation of Teachers, over 90% of educators have been vaccinated, but the increasing prevalence of the delta form, especially among youngsters, necessitates the new policy.

The governor’s office spokesperson, Amelia Matier, said schools must be fully compliant with the new regulation by Oct. 15. After a vaccination for children under 12 is authorized, Newsom said he might extend the mandate to students.
